Wharfe Valley’s claim to fame is that we were the first farming business in the UK to spot the potential to develop our rapeseed crop by creating our own brand of rapeseed oils.
Fast forward fifteen years -we are so very proud – Wharfe Valley is an established and leading brand with a range of flavoured oils, salad dressings and mayos, all available in retail outlets, quality food halls and direct from the farm or the online shop.
And whilst product development continues apace, behind the scenes the original values of the Kilby family farming business remain a constant and underpin why the business has blossomed. Sallyann shares the story:
“One of our major supermarkets once asked me “What is your USP?”
I couldn’t give a slick corporate answer to summarise the reason why they should buy from our business. Regarding our products – we have plenty to say and plenty of benefits to offer. But for us it is not the whole story. The more I thought about it the more concerned I became, and then it came to me. So, here’s how I sum it up – straight from the heart:
“We are special because we are a small community-minded family business – we know each and every farmer who grows their seed for us, not because we met them in some meeting or other, but because we grew up with them. They have been friends for over 60 years, and we work together. We give them the best price we can, not because that is what they ask, but because that is what we want to do.
Everything we do is a ‘labour of love’ for us. As third generation farmers, we believe that we have a duty of care to our land and our harvest – preserving all the natural and nutritional values of our oils.
We tick the boxes for provenance, sustainability and care of the environment as we grow a high percentage of rapeseed on our farm’s limestone soil, where we harvest, press and bottle it, capturing its unique, slightly nutty flavour.
Over the years Wharfe Valley’s relationships with our suppliers, customers, retailers and celebrity chefs have flourished.
So too, the recognition for our products, with an enviable array of awards for product taste and flavour, plus voted one of ‘The Best of British Family Businesses 2018”.
Sallyann finishes with “We welcome many visitors to the farm so if you are passing do pop in.”
